Flood threat in Sylhet due to hilly rains
Sylhet Bureau :
Due to continuous rain and hill torrents in India over the past few days, the water level in the rivers of Sylhet is rising. Along with this, there is intermittent rain in Sylhet. However, the water level in any river has not crossed the danger level yet.
Water Development Board (WDB) Sylhet Executive Engineer Deepak Ranjan Das said that the water level in all the rivers including the two main rivers of the district, Surma and Kushiyara, is rising. The water level in the Sari-Goain and Dhalai rivers is touching the danger level. Cherrapunji, Meghalaya, India, received 410 mm of rain in 24 hours from Friday to Saturday.
This is a warning. Whenever it rains in India, hill torrents come to Sylhet through the rivers and rivers on the border. According to local residents, the water level is rising rapidly in the lower reaches of Goainghat, Companiganj, Jaintapur, Zakiganj and Kanaighat upazilas. Even if the rain continues, there is a risk of the situation deteriorating.
The tourist centers of Jaflong and Bichnakandi in Gowainghat upazila and the tourist center of Sapadhar in Companiganj upazila have been flooded with water. Local people have advised tourists not to travel to these places.
The district administration said that despite the increase in water, no one has been reported to be trapped in water.
The local administration is monitoring the situation; the public has also been asked to be alert. In addition, adequate amounts of dry food have been stocked. Gowainghat Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Ratan Kumar Adhikari said that a portion of the low-lying part of the Gowainghat-Radhanagar road in the upazila has been flooded.
However, the water will recede once the rain subsides. Although no area in the upazila has been flooded yet, they have made all kinds of preparations to deal with the situation. Due to the continuous hill slopes and rain, water is rising in some areas. Companyganj UNO Azizunnahar said that the water has decreased slightly on Saturday compared to yesterday.
Although there is water in the low-lying areas, no village or area has been flooded. 35 shelters have been prepared in the upazila. However, no one has needed to take shelter in these shelters yet. According to the Meteorological Department, Sylhet, 132 millimeters of rain fell in Sylhet on Saturday.
Later, 1 millimeter of rain fell from 6 am to 9 am today and 7 millimeters from 9 am to 12 noon. This rain is still continuing. Meanwhile, a control room has been set up for emergency communication to take quick and effective steps to resolve the waterlogging caused in different areas of Sylhet city due to sudden heavy rain, said City Corporation Secretary Ashiq Noor in an office order.
The office order said that the control room was opened in room number 205 on the second floor of the City Corporation. Superintendent Engineer Ali Akbar is in charge of this room. His mobile number: 01711906647.
