To promote the breeding of fish and wildlife and preserve the ecological balance, the government has imposed a three-month ban on fishing and tourism in the Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest.
The ban will be effective from June 1 to August 31, during which all fishing activities in rivers and canals and tourist entry will be strictly prohibited.
According to forest officials, this annual measure, taken by the Sundarbans Forest Department, aims to create a safe and undisturbed environment for aquatic life and forest wildlife during their peak breeding season.
Tanvir Hasan Imran, Officer at the Sharankhola Forest Station, stated that from May 24, the issuance of entry permits (passes) for fishermen, honey collectors, and tourists has been suspended to ensure a smooth implementation of the restriction.
Speaking to media, Md. Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the East Sundarbans Division in Bagerhat, said, “This temporary closure is part of our broader effort to boost the reproductive capacity of aquatic and wildlife species. No entry into the forest will be allowed during this time.”
To support those who rely on the Sundarbans for their livelihoods, especially fishers, honey collectors (Mouals), and wood collectors (Bawalis), the Forest Department has submitted a proposal to the Ministry for food assistance and financial incentives. The proposal is currently under review.
Meanwhile, Tanzir Hasan, DFO of the West Sundarbans Division in Khulna, added that the government will provide assistance to the affected communities during the ban period, as part of its commitment to sustainable forest management and conservation.
This seasonal restriction has become a regular initiative by the Forest Department to protect biodiversity, allow natural regeneration, and reduce pollution in the Sundarbans ecosystem.
