Staff Reporter :

Today marks the 44th death anniversary of BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman.

To observe the occasion, the BNP and its affiliated organizations have announced an eight-day programme. The commemoration began on 25 May and will continue until June 2, featuring a range of events and activities.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi revealed the programme on May 20, following a joint meeting of the party and its associated bodies held at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan.

He stated, “As Eid-ul-Adha will be observed on 7 June, we have slightly shortened the schedule of our programme.”

Ziaur Rahman, who founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in 1978, was assassinated on 30 May 1981 by a group of army officers
at the Chittagong Circuit House.

As part of the 30 May observance, black flags will be hoisted and the party flag will be flown at half-mast at BNP offices, including the central office in Nayapaltan, starting from 6 am.

At 10:30 am the same day, BNP leaders, activists, and members of associated organizations will place floral wreaths at Ziaur Rahman’s grave in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. Prayers will be offered for his departed soul, followed by a doa and milad mahfil.

Earlier, on Thursday, the party organized a commemorative discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, in honor of Ziaur Rahman.

Throughout the observance period, various programmes will be held, including discussion meetings, mass prayers at mosques, and the distribution of essentials like rice, lentils, and clothing to underprivileged people by BNP and its affiliate bodies.

Special newspaper supplements will also be published to commemorate the late president.

On 30 May, BNP’s Dhaka North and South city units will lead relief distribution efforts across different thanas and wards.

Additionally, BNP’s local units at the city, district, upazila, and municipality levels will mark the day with due solemnity through discussions, food and clothing distribution, and other community-focused events.
