Dr Asif Nazrul, Adviser to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, has commended the courageous leadership of the July mass uprising, saying it paved the way for justice to be established in the country.
“This is a hard-won opportunity, and it is now the duty of all of us to protect it,” he wrote in a status on his verified Facebook account.
His remarks came shortly after the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court acquitted Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul Islam of charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity, overturning his previous conviction and death sentence handed down by the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1).
“ATM Azharul Islam has been acquitted of the death penalty in the Liberation War crimes case after being proven innocent. The Appellate Division, led by the Chief Justice, unanimously accepted his review petition,” Dr Nazrul wrote. “Today’s verdict nullifies both the ICT’s original death sentence and the Appellate Division’s earlier decision to uphold it.”
Dr Nazrul emphasized the significance of the ruling and credited the spirit and leadership of the July movement for creating the environment in which such judicial outcomes could be possible.
