The BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology (BUFT) observed World Environment Day 2025 with a dynamic two-day program held on 24-25 May, led by the Department of Environmental Science in collaboration with the BUFT Science & Environmental Club, under the global theme “Ending Plastic Pollution.”
The observance began with an awareness rally and clean-up campaign, drawing enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, and senior officials, including Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Engr. Ayub Nabi Khan; Treasurer Prof. Md. Alamgir Hossain; Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Jalil, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Textile Engineering; Prof. Dr. Sirajul Karim Choudhury, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Studies; Dr. Md. Mohibul Islam Khan, Head of the Department of Natural Science; and Dr. Mohammad Shohrab Hossain Sarker, Head of the Department of Environmental Science. Participants marched through the BUFT campus and surrounding areas, concluding with a clean-up drive along the Turag River, where volunteers collected plastic waste and raised awareness among local communities about sustainable and eco-friendly practices.
Day two featured a seminar titled “Empowering the Next Generation to Beat Plastic Pollution”, with keynote speeches by KM Abdullah Al Mahmud, Director General (Finance & Budget), Joint Secretary, BEZA; Dr. Muhammad Mohiuddin, Professor, Department of International Business and Global Strategy, Laval University, Quebec, Canada; and Dr. Nepal Chandra Dey, Managing Director, Research and Entrepreneurship Development Limited. The event also included a cultural showcase, Green Corner exhibition, and a prize-giving ceremony honoring winners of the student write-up competition.
The celebration concluded with a collective pledge to reduce single-use plastics and promote environmentally responsible living underscoring BUFT’s commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.
