BNP factional clash leaves 10 hurt in Meherpur
Staff Reporter :
A bitter clash between two rival factions of the BNP atMeherpur on Friday left at least 10 people injured, escalating tensions ahead of the party’s local organizational reshuffling.
The incident erupted around noon in Amjhupi Bazar, Sadar Upazila, when supporters of two BNP leaders—Kamrul Hasan, member-secretary of the district BNP convening committee, and Saiful Islam, former upazila BNP general secretary—came to blows over the formation of a union-level committee.
According to witnesses, Kamrul Hasan was en route to attend the bi-annual conference of Amjhupi Union BNP. As his motorcade passed through the marketplace from Meherpur town toward Gandharajpur, a group loyal to Saiful Islam allegedly attempted to block his convoy, triggering a heated confrontation.
Soon, chaos broke out, and both sides engaged in a violent skirmish. A joint force of army and police, alerted from a nearby army camp, rushed to the spot to de-escalate the situation. Law enforcers initially attempted to divert the motorcade through an alternate route, but the clash intensified before peace could be restored.
Officer-in-Charge of Meherpur Sadar Police Station, Mejbah Uddin, confirmed the incident and said, “The situation is currently under control. Additional police have been deployed to prevent further unrest.”
Kamrul Hasan’s camp claimed six of their supporters were injured, while Saiful Islam’s group reported three casualties. The injured were taken to Meherpur 250-Bed General Hospital, and two were later referred to Kushtia Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Despite the intensity of the clash, no written complaints have been filed yet, and no arrests have been made, said OC Mejbah.
In a separate incident in Kushtia, tensions also flared between BNP supporters and Jamaat-e-Islami over a 150-year-old traditional fair, leaving 11 people injured and adding to the day’s political volatility.
