‘Lack of roadmap fuels political unrest’

Zonayed Saki, Chief Coordinator of the Gonosonghoti Andolon has said that the absence of a clear roadmap for justice, reform, and credible elections has led to ongoing political instability and uncertainty in the country.

Speaking at a labor rally organized by Bangladesh Garments Sramik Sanghati in front of the National Press Club on Friday (23 May), Saki emphasized the crucial role of workers in building a new Bangladesh.

“If workers’ rights are not ensured, then a new Bangladesh cannot be built,” Saki declared. “This mass uprising stands on the blood of workers.”

He urged the government to pay greater attention to the rights of workers and called for the swift implementation of the recommendations of the Labor Organization Commission.

Highlighting the need for a new democratic political arrangement, Saki stated, “There is currently no balance of power in the country. Even after the fall of fascism on August 5, power now rests solely in the hands of one person.”

He called for the announcement of a clear roadmap for judicial reform and fair elections. On labor rights, he said, “There must be a safe working environment in the garment sector, a living wage to ensure a dignified life, and proper maternity leave for female workers.”

Saki also emphasized the need for labor laws that meet international standards, saying, “According to the report of the Labor Reform Commission, we must formulate labor laws that match global benchmarks. The current laws have too many loopholes, which must be closed.”

He concluded by affirming the necessity of struggle in the pursuit of rights. “There is no alternative to struggle when it comes to claiming our rights. Even now, we are having to fight. And we must remain prepared to continue this fight in the future.”
Leaders of various labor organizations also addressed the rally.
