2 killed in wild elephants’ attack in Sherpur

Two people were killed in a wild elephants attack in Jhenaigati Upazila of bordering Sherpur district. They died in wild elephants attack in Gozni Darveshtala and Bakakura of Kangsha union of Jhenaigati Upazila at about 9 pm and 10:30 pm on Tuesday, May 20, within one and a half hour.

The victims are Azizur Raman Akash (40), son of late Abdul Hakim of Gandhigaon Darveshtala area of the upazila, and Ephelis Marak (45), son of Sohan Marak of Boro Gozni area.

Forest Department and local sources said, for the past few days, a herd of 30-40 wild elephants have been destroying various crops including boro paddy, jackfruit and litchi orchards in Gozni and its surrounding areas in Jhenaigati Upazila.

On Tuesday evening, a herd of wild elephants started destroying a litchi garden in the Boro Gozni area . At that time, locals tried to drive away the herd of wild elephants by lighting torches, searchlights and making noise. At one point, at about 9 pm, everyone ran away after being chased by the elephants but Azizul Islam Akash fell down on the ground. At once, a wild elephant twisted him with its trunk and crushed him to death.

On the other hand, at about 10:30 pm, four local farmers including Ephelis were going home from Bakakura to Boro Gozni area. On the way, wild elephants staying in the forest suddenly attacked them. Three of them managed to escape but wild elephants twisted Ephelis with its trunk also and crushed him to death.
