Staff Reporter :
Salman F Rahman, a former adviser to Sheikh Hasina, along with ex-ministers Anisul Huq, Dr. Dipu Moni, and Qamrul Islam, have been shown as arrested in several cases related to the anti-discrimination movement in Dhaka.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate MA Azharul Islam granted the petitions on Monday to show them arrested in the respective cases. Earlier, petitions were filed to show former Social Welfare Minister Dipu Moni and former Food Minister Qamrul Islam arrested in the Shahbagh Police Station’s Monir murder case, and Salman F Rahman and former Law Minister Anisul Huq in the Kadamtali Police Station’s Masud murder case.
They were brought to court from jail that morning for hearings on the petitions. The investigating officers of the cases then submitted their requests to show the four accused as arrested.
State counsel and Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki argued in favour of the petitions.
After the hearing, the judge granted the requests to show them arrested. When defense lawyers filed for bail, the court rejected those applications.
According to the complaint in the Masud murder case, during the anti-discrimination movement on July 19 last year, protesters were stationed at an under-construction building named Paradise Palace in Miraznagar under Kadamtali Police Station. Around 7 pm, Masud was shot. He died around 1:30 am while undergoing treatment.
Following the incident, his wife Hena Begum filed a case with Kadamtali Police Station on September 4, naming Sheikh Hasina and 117 others.
In the Monir murder case, the complaint states that on August 5, protesters gathered near the Dhaka Medical College Hospital intersection, adjacent to Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover at Palashi, under Shahbagh Police Station. Monir was killed in a shooting during the protest.
His wife Ruzina Akter filed a case in court on March 14, accusing Sheikh Hasina and 350 others.
