36th July Uprising’ Book Presented to International Crimes Tribunal

In a significant move towards seeking justice for the victims of the July 2024 massacre, journalist and researcher Muhammad Nurul Alam has presented his book, “36th July Uprising,” along with supporting documents, to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) of Bangladesh. The materials were handed over to ICT Chairman Justice Golam Mortuza Mojumdar and Chief Prosecutor Advocate Tazul Islam during a formal ceremony held earlier this week.
The presentation took place at the tribunal’s office and the investigators’ office in Dhanmondi, with the presence of other tribunal judges, including Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Justice Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury, as well as prosecutors and investigation officers. The book is expected to serve as a crucial document in the ongoing efforts to prosecute those responsible for the July massacre.
The “36th July Uprising” delves into the events of July and August 2024, when student-led protests escalated into a violent crackdown, resulting in the deaths of at least 78 madrasa students, including 14 Quran memorizers (Hafiz). The book includes detailed accounts, photographs, and statistical data on the victims and the sequence of events. It also explores the transformation of political entities, such as the Awami League and its student wing, into what the author describes as fascist forces, and discusses the alleged flight of Sheikh Hasina during the turmoil.
Author Muhammad Nurul Alam emphasized that the book is a factual and research-based account, written from his perspective as a journalist who witnessed the events firsthand. He expressed hope that the documentation would aid the tribunal in delivering justice to the victims and their families.
The ICT officials acknowledged the potential value of the book in supporting the legal proceedings and expressed optimism that it would contribute to ensuring justice for the victims of the July massacre.
The book was published by the “36th July Think Tank Group” and is considered a significant contribution to the documentation of the events surrounding the July uprising.
