A worker named Rajab Ali drowned in the Piain River while extracting sand illegally in Jaflong of Gowainghat Upazila of Sylhet.
His body was recovered from the Piain River in the Nayabasti area of Jaflong around 10:30 am on Monday (May 12). The deceased Rajab Ali (40) is the son of Rahmat Ullah of Barban Haor village in Madhya Jaflong Union of the upazila.
According to police and local sources, the deceased Rajab Ali went to extract sand in the Piain River in a barque boat around 8:30 am. He got off the barque boat in the middle of the Piain River in the Nayabasti area to the south and started extracting sand. At one point, he dived into the river and drowned. When Rajab Ali did not come out of the water for a long time, other workers in the vicinity started searching in the river. After about half an hour, Rajab Ali’s body surfaced from under the water. Later, his relatives and other workers took Rajab’s body home.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gowainghat Police Station Sarkar Tofail Ahmed said that a worker named Rajab Ali drowned while collecting sand in the Piain River in Jaflong. An autopsy report has been prepared. The family has been told to submit an application. The body will be handed over to the family subject to the permission of the Sylhet Additional District Magistrate (ADM).
