Masum Billah Imran, Khulna Bureau:

Fresh allegations have surfaced against Nurul Karim Bhuiyan, a 25th BCS cadre officer already implicated in the DC recruitment scam during Bangladesh’s interim government period. At a press conference held at the Khulna Press Club on Sunday, housewife Jannat-e-Khatun Mitu accused Nurul Karim of conspiring to destroy her family.

In a written statement, Mitu explained that she married marine engineer Abdullah Alam Mamun in 2008. They have three children: Tausif Al Mamun (14), Tahmim Al Mamun (8), and Safi Subaiya Nur (5). Mitu stated that soon after marriage, she discovered her husband’s serious character flaws but chose to stay for the sake of her family, hoping for reform.

The situation reportedly worsened after 2010, when her sister-in-law, Minara Nazmin, married Nurul Karim Bhuiyan. Both are officers from the 25th BCS batch. This was Nurul Karim’s third marriage and Minara Nazmin’s second. Following their marriage, Mitu alleged that her husband became increasingly abusive, subjecting her to repeated physical torture, once causing injuries so severe that she spent eight days in the ICU at Khulna Medical College Hospital.

In 2021, after her husband remarried — this time to her cousin, Mahmuda Rahman Tania — Mitu was forced to leave her marital home with her children. She stated that her eldest son, Tausif, became mentally distressed and insisted on returning to their home. On November 12 last year, when the children attempted to visit, they were allegedly abused and beaten by their father, his new wife, and house staff.

Days later, on November 16, the two sons were denied entry into their father’s home. On their way back, two unidentified individuals reportedly abducted them after forcing them to drink spiked soft drinks. The boys were rescued three days later from the Mohammadpur area of Dhaka. Despite multiple attempts to file a case and a General Diary (GD) entry at Khulna Sadar Police Station, police allegedly refused assistance and even threatened them with jail. Only after a court case was filed did action begin, though Mitu alleged that police later threatened her eldest son at gunpoint during Ramadan to withdraw the case.

Mitu further accused Nurul Karim Bhuiyan of exerting administrative influence over local police stations and courts by leveraging his position as a senior officer. She claimed he uses political connections, introducing himself as close to top BNP leaders, to protect his interests. Mitu also revealed that Nurul Karim has listed the family’s five-story ancestral home on Trunk Road for sale at Tk 11 crore without ensuring any share for their minor children. She expressed fear that he intends to sell the property and flee abroad.

Additionally, she alleged that neither divorce proceedings nor child maintenance has been properly handled. She accused Nurul Karim Bhuiyan and Minara Nazmin of amassing illicit wealth during their service, which they allegedly laundered to the United States.

Currently, Nurul Karim is on stand release, while Minara Nazmin has been designated an Officer on Special Duty (OSD).
