Dhaka installs new traffic lights at 22 intersections for Tk 180 million

New traffic signal lights are being installed at 22 intersections across Dhaka’s two city corporations. Developed using local technology, the project is costing approximately Tk 180 million (Tk 18 crore). The Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) has designed these new traffic lights.

According to BUET experts, the installation aims to ease traffic congestion and improve road discipline. As part of a short-term initiative, the traffic lights are being set up along a specific corridor in Dhaka, covering 14 intersections under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and 8 under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

The project stems from discussions held on September 16 last year, when BUET professors Moazzem Hossain and Md Hadiuzzaman met with interim government chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus to address Dhaka’s traffic woes. Various short-term, medium-term, and long-term solutions were proposed. Subsequently, during a ‘Dhaka City Traffic Management’ meeting at BUET on October 16, the decision to install new traffic lights was finalized.

Khondoker Mahbub Alam, superintending engineer of DNCC’s traffic engineering circle, told Prothom Alo, “Following recommendations from the highest levels of government, traffic signals are being installed with BUET’s support. We hope this initiative will significantly reduce traffic congestion in Dhaka and benefit city residents.”
