New political party launched by actor Ilias Kanchan

In a move that signals a new phase in the country’s evolving political landscape, celebrated actor and veteran road safety campaigner Ilias Kanchan formally launched his new political platform, Janata Party Bangladesh, on Friday.
The party’s launch event took place at the Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka, drawing a diverse crowd of political veterans, professionals, and civil society advocates.
At approximately 11:15 a.m., Kanchan stood before the assembled audience to announce the birth of the party, whose slogan—“Gorbo Mora Insafer Desh” (“We Will Build a Just Nation”)—reflects a mission rooted in justice, democratic values, and national reconstruction.
The formation of Janata Party Bangladesh adds yet another player to the country’s already complex political arena.
According to its newly appointed secretary general, Shawkat Mahmud, the party is being formed in direct response to the nation’s growing disillusionment with established political forces.
“Every popular uprising in this country has given birth to new political expressions,” Mahmud said, invoking the Liberation War of 1971 and what he termed the “democratic awakening of 2024.”
He emphasised that the new party’s agenda is to reconstruct the state in line with the spirit of the country’s founding struggle while addressing modern-day demands for justice, equity, and democratic integrity.
