Bir Shrestha Munshi Abdur Rouf’s 54th martyrdom anniv observed

The 54th martyrdom anniversary of Bir Shrestha Shaheed Lance Naik Munshi Abdur Rouf was observed with the conviction that ‘we will forever remember the contributions of the best sons of the country and dedicate ourselves to building the country of their dreams’. On this occasion, a discussion meeting and prayer mahfil were held at the Bir Shrestha Munshi Abdur Rouf Memorial Museum and Library meeting room on Sunday (April 20) at 5 pm under the auspices of the Upazila Administration and Kamarkhali Union Sudhijan. The national flag was hoisted on the premises of the Bir Shrestha Munshi Abdur Rouf Memorial Museum and Library this morning.
In the afternoon, the discussion meeting was chaired by UP Chairman and Upazila BNP President Chowdhury Rakib Hossain Iran and moderated by Lecturer Kalimulla. Madhukhali Upazila Executive Officer Md. Abu Russell, Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Erfanur Rahman, Thana Officer-in-Charge (OC) SM Nuruzzaman, freedom fighter Matiul Islam Murad, former Chairman Md. Lutfar Rahman, teacher A. Samad Molya, Maulana Amin Uddin Jihadi, Lecturer Enamul Haque and members of the Union Parishad, along with local leaders, spoke.
Munshi Abdur Rouf, the only son of father Munshi Mehedi Hasan and mother Mokidunnesa, was born on May 1, 1943 in the village of Roufnagar (Salamatpur) in the present Kamarkhali Union of Madhukhali Upazila. His father passed away at the age of 11. During the War of Independence, he joined the 8th East Bengal Regiment while serving in its wing and participated in the Liberation War. He was deployed as a machine gunner under the 8th Sector Commander in the defense of Chingrikhaal at a place called Burighat in the Mahalchhari waterway area of Rangamati.
On April 20, 1971, during a frontal battle with the Pak army, Munshi Abdur Rouf’s machine gun fire sank two launches and a speedboat of the Pak army, causing a grave for two platoons of the Pak army. At that time, he was suddenly hit by a mortar shell fired by the opponent. AbdurRouf was martyred 25 years after his martyrdom. In 1996, with the help of Burighat residents Jyotish Chandra Chakma and DayalKrinchChakma, his grave was identified. A memorial was built there in 1997.
Besides, several institutions have been established in the name of BirShrestha in various parts of the country, including Kamarkhali in Madhukhali, under the initiative of the government.Shah Md. FarukHossain, Madhukhali (Faridpur) Correspondent:
