4 AL leaders’ houses vandalised in Sylhet

In the aftermath of Eid, Sylhet, a city known for its religious significance, has been rocked by a wave of violence. On the same day, the homes of four prominent leaders from the Awami League and its affiliates were targeted and vandalised. However, the unrest was sparked by the actions of unruly Chhatra League workers, whose procession may have triggered these violent incidents.

It is known that on Wednesday (April 2), workers of the banned organisation Chhatra League took out a procession and distributed leaflets in the Dhopadighirpar area of ​​the city. A group of 15/20 people took out a procession under the banner of the banned organisation Sylhet Metropolitan Chhatra League.

The banner had a picture of Awami League Central Organizing Secretary Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel and slogans could be heard being raised in his name. When the video of the procession went viral on social media, there was a storm of criticism. The video was also uploaded to the verified page of the Awami League. 7 people have been arrested in this incident.

Meanwhile, Sylhet has suddenly become heated after the procession of the banned organisation Chhatra League. In the evening, the houses of 4 leaders of the Awami League and its affiliates were attacked and vandalised.

The houses of Awami League’s central organising secretary and former member of parliament (MP) of Moulvibazar-2 (Kulaura) constituency Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel and former mayor of Sylhet City Corporation Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury were attacked. The attackers vandalised various items in their houses. The attack occurred on Wednesday (April 2) evening.

It is learned that several people entered the house of Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel in the city’s housing estate area after the evening with a procession. During this time, they vandalised the house’s CCTV camera and laptop. At around 7:30pm, the house of Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury was also attacked in the city’s Pathantula area. Similarly, the attackers vandalised the furniture in the house.

Airport Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Syed Anisur Rahman said that the angry student mob attacked and vandalised the house of Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel. Police inspected the scene after receiving the information.

Jalalabad Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Harunur Rashid said the police went to the scene after receiving the information about the attack by Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury. I heard that the angry student mob carried out the attack.

In addition, the houses of two former councilors of Sylhet City Corporation were attacked. The attacks took place on Wednesday (April 2) evening at the houses of former councilors of Wards 7 and 32.

It is learned that the house of Ruhel Ahmed, a former councilor of Ward 32 and president of the banned Sylhet Government College Chhatra League, located in the Majortila area of ​​the city, was attacked. Meanwhile, the house of Aftab Hossain Khan, a former councilor of Ward 7 and president of the Metropolitan Volunteer League, was also attacked at the same time.

Jalalabad Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Harunur Rashid said we have received information about the attack on the house of former councilor Aftab Hossain Khan. However, it is not yet known who or what carried out the attack.

Shahparan Police Station OC (Investigation) Rasul Samdani Azad Apel said a police team went to the spot after receiving information about the attack on the house of former councilor Ruhel Ahmed. No one has filed a complaint with the police station yet in this incident.
