6,202 political cases set for withdrawal

Staff Reporter :

The central committee formed by the Home Ministry to review politically motivated and harassing cases has recommended the withdrawal of 6,202 cases, according to an official media release issued on Sunday.

The committee, led by Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Professor Asif Nazrul, has convened eight meetings to assess and determine the merit of cases for withdrawal.

During these meetings, a total of 6,295 case withdrawal proposals were submitted for review.

According to the statement, many of the cases under consideration were filed during the 15-year tenure of the ousted government.

These cases were deemed to be politically motivated or designed to harass opposition figures.

The interim government has taken steps to address these concerns by forming two committees, both headed by Professor Asif Nazrul, to scrutinise and recommend appropriate actions regarding these cases.

This move has been met with mixed reactions from various political parties and legal experts.

While some view it as a necessary step toward ensuring justice and fairness, others argue that each case should be carefully reviewed to prevent the potential misuse of legal privileges.

The final decision on the case withdrawals will be executed following further legal procedures and approvals from the relevant authorities.

Background on Case Withdrawal ProcessThe process of withdrawing politically motivated cases has been a longstanding demand by many political parties and human rights organizations.

The government’s initiative to reassess these cases is seen as an effort to restore trust in the legal system and eliminate any misuse of judicial processes for political gains.

The Home Ministry has assured that the cases being withdrawn are only those that lack substantial evidence or were proven to have been filed with the intent to suppress political dissent.
