Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus emphasised the strategic importance of Bangladesh’s coastline on Thursday, describing it as a key asset for economic growth and international trade.

Speaking at a gathering at the BIAM Auditorium in Cox’s Bazar, Yunus highlighted the untapped potential of the country’s marine resources and their role in shaping Bangladesh’s economic future.

“We are fortunate to have a sea,” he told the audience. “The sea is vital for trade, and we must harness its potential.”

The Chief Adviser pointed to Bangladesh’s extensive coastline, particularly in Chattogram, as an opportunity to develop new seaports, which he believes could significantly enhance the country’s connectivity with global markets.

He also noted the rapid transformation of Cox’s Bazar, traditionally known for tourism, into a growing economic hub.

Drawing comparisons with landlocked regions, Yunus stressed the need for Bangladesh’s seaports to serve not only the country but also neighbouring areas, including Nepal and India’s northeastern states, to promote regional economic integration.

“We have the opportunity to change our future through trade,” he said.

During the discussion, Yunus interacted with local salt producers, encouraging them to explore international markets for their products.

He also expressed strong interest in the potential of wind energy, highlighting a pilot project in Cox’s Bazar as a promising step towards renewable energy generation.

Encouraging the people of Cox’s Bazar to capitalise on emerging economic opportunities, Yunus envisioned the city becoming a future powerhouse for both commerce and information technology.

He also sought feedback from locals on the impact of the Rohingya influx on the community, as Bangladesh continues to host over a million refugees from Myanmar.

During the interactive session, residents presented various proposals and development concerns, urging government attention to further enhance the region’s economic prospects.
