The British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Sarah Cook, organised an Iftar Mahfil in honor of eminent personalities representing various professions in Sylhet.
On Wednesday (March 12) evening, the UK High Commission organised an Iftar Mahfil at the five-star Grand Sylhet Hotel and Resort in the airport area of Sylhet.
At the event, British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Sarah Cook, paid tribute to the student-public movement and said, “We respect the courage and peaceful protest of the students. In this continuation, the current interim government will certainly contribute to the improvement of the law and order situation, good governance and the establishment of national unity.”
The event was attended by government officials, political leaders, lawyers, journalists and other dignitaries from various professions.
At the event, Sarah Cook commented that the contribution of the people of the Sylhet region to the UK economy is very valuable. She said that Bangladesh is a long-standing friend and ally of the UK. The relationship between the two countries is getting stronger day by day because of Sylhet.
Sarah Cook hopes for a prosperous democratic future for Bangladesh.
She said that the British government has provided 75 million taka in aid and provided assistance to 50,000 vulnerable people in the recent devastating floods in Sylhet. In addition, the British government has also provided funding to the Bangladesh government to address the risks of climate change. She also emphasized how the UK and Sylhet can further strengthen their close ties.
