Petition against proposal of Savar Union municipality

The local residents have written to the local government department demanding that the area under Aichanoadda under the jurisdiction of Ward No. 3, a part of Savar Sadar Union of Savar Municipality, should not be included in the municipality. Abdur Rahim, a local resident and headmaster of Chapin New Model High School, submitted the application to the Secretary of the Local Government Department on Tuesday on behalf of the local residents.
The application was filed against the recent initiative taken by the municipal administration to bring the area under the municipal jurisdiction. It is said in the writ petition that the area has always been under the Union Parishad and the citizens here have been receiving their necessary services from the Union Parishad.
But recently the Savar Municipal Administration has miked the Municipal Taxation Team to collect information from the residents and there has been a furor when it was announced that the Municipal Tax will be levied. On February 20, when a team of Savar municipality went to the area to determine the tax, they got into an argument and tension with the locals.
The petition also mentioned that at one stage, the municipal workers stopped the miking activities in the face of local people’s fire and went back in the face of the anger of the locals.
The petition claimed that the residents of the area have never expressed their desire to be included in the municipality and currently their civic benefits are sufficient under the Union Parishad. They think that especially if it is connected with the municipality, there will be problems in the movement of the locals.
Besides, inclusion in the municipality would naturally result in increased tax burden on the local residents, the petition said. Locals claim that a gazette in 2005 showed their area included in the municipality. But it was ineffective, illegal and conspiratorial.
