5pc quota for July victims in school admissions scrapped
Staff Reporter :
The Ministry of Education has cancelled the previous order regarding the 5 per cent quota for the children of those injured or martyred during the July-August uprising in the admission process to government schools.
However, it has been instructed that for the children of those injured or martyred in the July Uprising, one seat per class should be reserved in addition to the designated lottery seats for government school admissions.
The Ministry issued a new order, canceling the previous one on Monday (March 3). The order was signed by the Deputy Secretary (Secondary-1) of the Ministry of Education, Ms. Rahima Akter.
The new order states that many students and citizens were injured or martyred during the July-August 2024 uprising. The order, issued on February 20, 2025, regarding the admission of their family members to government secondary schools, has been canceled and replaced with the new one.
The order further specifies that for the children of those injured or martyred in the July Uprising, in addition to the lottery-determined seats for government secondary school admissions, one seat will be reserved per class. When determining the seats for these families, a certified copy of the relevant proof/documentation must be attached to the application, and the original copy must be presented at the time of admission.
The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs will verify the gazette of martyrs from the July Uprising 2024 to complete the admission process properly. If the family members of the injured or martyred in the July Uprising 2024 are not available, the seat should be filled from the merit list. Under no circumstances should a seat remain vacant.
Earlier, on March 2, the Ministry of Education had announced in an order dated February 20 that a 5 per cent quota would be allocated for the children of those injured or martyred during the July-August 2024 uprising for admission to government schools, similar to the quota for freedom fighters. The order stated that 5 per cent of the seats would be reserved for the children of freedom fighters or martyrs and for the children of those injured or martyred during the July Uprising 2024.
