Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, on Monday directed Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to uphold law and order, enhance market monitoring to ensure price stability and public welfare, and strictly safeguard the rights of all citizens.
He made these remarks while inaugurating the three-day DCs Conference at Shapla Hall in his office.
The Chief Adviser reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting minority rights, stating, “The government’s duty is to provide security for everyone, and it is our collective responsibility to uphold the rights of minorities.”
He encouraged minority communities to exercise their rights with confidence as equal citizens.
Emphasising the importance of law and order, he instructed DCs to ensure strict enforcement without any lapses.
Addressing market regulation, Dr Yunus proposed a ranking system to evaluate and recognise DCs’ efforts in monitoring markets.
He suggested that district-level competition could lead to improved supervision and better market conditions.
Highlighting the need for efficient birth registration services, he pointed out that delays often obstruct access to national identity cards (NIDs) and passports. “Every citizen has the fundamental right to obtain a passport.
Authorities must take the necessary steps to eliminate any harassment in the process,” he asserted.
Comparing governance to teamwork, the Chief Adviser stressed that the efficiency of each official contributes to overall success.
He also called for greater coordination between the police and civil administration to maintain discipline and effectiveness.
He reiterated the government’s earlier decision to remove police verification as a requirement for passport issuance.
Dr Yunus also urged the full implementation of the online land registration system, questioning the delays in its execution.
“The system has been introduced, so why isn’t it fully operational? What is causing the delay?” he asked.
Additionally, he called on DCs to prioritise primary education and actively address its challenges.
Principal Secretary Siraz Uddin Mia, Dhaka DC Sharf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Chattogram DC Farida Khanom, and Panchagarh DC Md Sabet Ali also spoke at the event.
This year’s conference includes 353 proposals and will feature 34 working sessions with different ministries and departments. The conference is set to conclude on Tuesday.
