Beyond her leadership at Mahmuda Attires Ltd, she plays a pivotal role in the broader operations of Rising Group, which encompasses various enterprises within the RMG industry. Through hard work, foresight, and strategic decision-making, she has established herself as a prominent business figure.
In an exclusive interview with The New Nation, Nargis Akhter shared insights into her company’s operations and her vision for the industry.
Mahmuda Attires: A global standard green industry
Nargis Akhter highlighted that Mahmuda Attires Ltd represents Bangladesh on the global stage as a reputed green factory in the RMG sector. While the textile industry is often categorised as environmentally hazardous, her company has demonstrated that sustainable and eco-friendly operations are achievable.
The company has been recognised for its commitment to environmental sustainability, receiving the Green Factory Award-2023 for the second time. This distinction is a testament to its adherence to professional health and safety measures and its environmentally responsible practices.
“Our company strictly follows all safety protocols,” she stated. “Implementing eco-friendly measures is not financially lucrative, as buyers do not offer additional compensation for maintaining a pollution-free industrial environment. However, we remain committed to preserving our surroundings as part of our responsibility to the nation.”
She further explained that although the installation of Environmentally Preferred Resources (EPR) is costly, the company has undertaken this initiative voluntarily.
“Despite the lack of financial incentives from buyers or the government, we have installed EPR equipment to ensure a sustainable future for the coming generations.”
Commitment to workers’ welfare and industry ethics
Receiving the Green Factory Award is a significant achievement for Mahmuda Attires Ltd, according to Nargis Akhter. “It is a source of pride and happiness for us. More of our factories will soon adopt similar sustainability measures.”
She emphasised the company’s dedication to workers’ welfare, ensuring that salaries are always paid on time. “We take great pride in fostering a clean, pollution-free environment while also prioritising the well-being of our workers. I urge all entrepreneurs to adopt similar practices to promote a business-friendly environment in the country.”
“We regard our workers as family and strive to reflect this in our treatment of them,” she added.
Empowering Women Entrepreneurs
When asked about being regarded as a role model for female entrepreneurs, Nargis Akhter responded modestly. “While people often refer to me as an icon for female entrepreneurship, I believe there is still much more to achieve.”
She encouraged aspiring women entrepreneurs to pursue their ambitions with confidence, as greater female participation is essential for the country’s economic growth. “Women face significant obstacles in becoming entrepreneurs in Bangladesh. Many still believe that women should not engage in business, a mindset prevalent not only in rural areas but also in urban settings.” However, she acknowledged the positive shift in societal attitudes. “The culture is evolving rapidly. Today, an increasing number of women are stepping into business, even in rural regions.” Nargis Akhter stressed the need for more female entrepreneurs to accelerate national economic progress. “Women constitute half of the population, making their involvement in economic activities crucial for the country’s advancement. I am optimistic that this trend will continue to evolve positively.”
Financial Barriers for Women Entrepreneurs
She pointed out the challenges women face in securing bank loans. “There is still discrimination in financial institutions. While male entrepreneurs receive loans with relative ease, women encounter significant difficulties in obtaining similar facilities. Such barriers hinder aspiring female entrepreneurs from establishing their businesses.”
Nargis Akhter called for a shift in the financial sector’s approach. “Banks and financial institutions must change their attitudes towards female entrepreneurs for the sake of national economic development. As more women engage in business, the overall economy will benefit.”
Breaking barriers and creating opportunities
She concluded with an inspiring message for women interested in business. “There are numerous industries where women can participate based on their interests and determination. They must be resolute in overcoming challenges and breaking barriers to contribute to the nation’s economic progress.”
