Modhumita Cinema Hall to stay open for now

Modhumita Cinema Hall in Dhaka will not be closing for now, owner Iftekhar Uddin Noushad has said, following reports about a week ago that the historic movie theatre would close after Eid-ul-Azha.

“We had made a decision earlier [to close the theatre, but later, the board of directors held multiple discussions regarding Modhumita. After thorough discussions, they decided not to proceed with the earlier decision,” Iftekhar said on Thursday.

“If we decide to close the hall in the future, we will officially announce it through a press conference.”

Last week, Iftekhar had announced that the cinema hall would be permanently closed after Eid-ul-Azha and replaced with a multi-storey building, which would include a cineplex.
Modhumita Cinema Hall was inaugurated on December 1, 1967, by Justice Abdul Jabbar Khan, then speaker of the Pakistan National Assembly.

The hall was founded by Puran Dhaka businessman Siraj Uddin.
Modhumita Cinema Hall has a seating capacity of 1,221 spectators at a time.

Currently, the hall is managed by his son, Iftekhar. All four sons of Siraj Uddin are now owners of the establishment.
