Gas crisis hits nation amid widespread shortages
Staff Reporter :
A severe gas shortage has gripped Dhaka and several other districts across Bangladesh, leaving households and businesses scrambling as supplies dwindle. The crisis, which began in the early hours of the day, is attributed to a mix of global supply chain disruptions, rising demand, and local distribution challenges.
Officials from the Ministry of Energy confirmed that the unprecedented situation has forced authorities to ration supplies, prioritising critical sectors while striving to stabilise the market. “We are facing an exceptional scenario that has significantly disrupted our distribution network,” said an Energy Ministry spokesperson. “Our teams are working around the clock to secure additional imports and restore regular supply lines.”
Residents in Dhaka expressed mounting frustration. “I’ve been waiting for hours just to get a small cylinder, and it’s not just about cooking—it affects our entire day-to-day life,” said Mohammad Rahman, a local resident.
Similar stories of long queues and reduced access have emerged from districts such as Chittagong and Khulna, where community leaders are urging calm amid the shortage.
In response to the crisis, the government has rolled out emergency measures including the deployment of additional distribution units and temporary relaxations in fuel import regulations.
Energy experts warn that the situation could worsen if not addressed promptly, especially with the winter season approaching—a period that typically sees a spike in gas usage.
“We understand the difficulties our citizens are facing,” stated the Energy Minister in a recent press briefing. “Restoring a stable supply is our top priority, and we are committed to implementing both immediate and long-term solutions, including infrastructural upgrades and the establishment of strategic reserves.”
As authorities work diligently to resolve the crisis, they are urging the public to remain patient and avoid panic-buying, emphasising that coordinated efforts will help bring the situation under control in the coming days.
