IU Correspondent :
The students of the Development Studies department at Islamic University in Kushtia have taken position in front of the vice-chancellor’s residence on the campus, demanding permanent expulsion of Assistant Professor Hafizul Islam on Tuesday.
The students took out a protest from Bottola and marched through the major road of the campus before taking position in front of the Vice Chancellor’s Residence.
During the protest, the students chanted slogans including ‘Remove Hafiz, Save the Campus’ , ‘Punishment or Leave, Punishment, Punishment’ , ‘We Reject the University’s Farce, and No place for Homosexuals on this Campus ‘.
Students allegedly said, “Although the university administration took six months to investigate the allegation, they have only decided on a one-year compulsory leave. This teacher has insulted parents in class and promoted homosexuality. We demand his permanent expulsion.”
Investigation Committee Head Kazi Mustafa Arif said, “We have recommended a punishment based on evidence of some allegations, but the administration will make the final decision.”
Pro-Vice-Chancellor Dr. M. Yaqub Ali said, “The university administration has given Hafizul Islam a one-year compulsory leave, which is equivalent to suspension. Only the university’s chancellor can take dismissal action. We are following the necessary legal steps.”
