Entrepreneurs must not be left in limbo as happens in Sirajganj BSCIC project
The ongoing saga of the Sirajganj BSCIC Industrial Park is a stark reminder of the corrosive effects of corruption and mismanagement within our public institutions.
Our newspaper on Tuesday reported that initially heralded as a beacon of hope for entrepreneurs and a catalyst for economic growth, the project has devolved into a quagmire of bureaucratic inefficiency and alleged malfeasance, leaving many to question its viability.
Despite the project being officially declared complete on 30 June last year, critical activities such as plot allocation remain unfinished.
This stagnation is not merely an administrative hiccup; it reflects a deeper malaise within the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) and the Ministry of Industry.
Despite numerous allegations of corruption, the promotion of the Project Director to Regional Director raises serious concerns about the accountability mechanisms in place.
His swift return to power after being removed from the Munshiganj project only adds to the perception of a system that rewards rather than penalises misconduct.
The implications of this mismanagement are dire. The Sirajganj Industrial Park envisioned to host over 570 industries, is now a symbol of dashed hopes for countless entrepreneurs who have invested time and resources in anticipation of its benefits.
The project, which has already seen its timeline extend from four years to nearly 14, is emblematic of a broader issue: the erosion of public trust in government initiatives.
Moreover, the reported misappropriation of funds and the lack of transparency surrounding the project’s budget and progress are alarming.
With over 40 per cent of the work incomplete when funds were withdrawn, an independent investigation must be launched to ascertain the truth behind these allegations.
The public should know how their money is being spent and why those responsible for the project’s failures continue evading accountability.
As a new officer awaits the formal handover of responsibilities, he must be empowered to act decisively. The BSCIC must prioritise transparency and efficiency, ensuring that the dreams of entrepreneurs are not further stifled by bureaucratic inertia.
Sirajganj BSCIC Industrial Park must serve as a wake-up call for our leaders. It is time to restore integrity to our institutions and ensure that those in positions of power are held accountable for their actions. Only then can we hope to foster an environment conducive to growth and innovation.
