Students of Jagannath University (JnU) have called off their hunger strike after 35 hours following a written commitment from the ministry.
AKM Rakib – a student from the Department of Botany at Jagannath University (JnU) – announced the withdrawal of their hunger strike 7pm on Monday during a press conference.
He said they had received a written commitment regarding the transfer of the second campus project to the military, which will be formalised in a meeting scheduled for Wednesday.
He also mentioned that temporary steel-based buildings would be constructed at Bani Bhaban and Dr Habibur Rahman Hall. Additionally, a promise was made to verify and discuss the allocation of stipends for 70 per cent of students. As a result, the students decided to end their hunger strike.
“Since two out of three demands were accepted and the third will be reviewed, we decided to call off the protest. However, until the meeting on Wednesday, all academic and administrative activities at the university will remain off.”
Earlier on Monday afternoon, the students began a march from Jagannath University towards the secretariat. They reached the secretariat, with some of them, who were unwell, participating in the march while lying in rickshaws with saline stands.
On Monday morning, they announced a “complete shutdown” at the university and also locked the main gate of the campus, the administrative building along with the buildings of different faculties.
The students carried out these programmes with a three-point demand, including the demand of handing over the project of construction of the second campus for Jagannath University to the army. They started the mass hunger strike at 8:30am on Sunday.
