Ishwardi Correspondent :
Despite the bumper yield of winter vegetables, the farmers of Ishwardi are not getting the price. They are disappointed not getting the desired price of the produced vegetables.
Most of the vegetables are wasted in the land due to oversupply in the market and less buyers. According to the Agriculture Department, such a fall in prices has occurred as winter vegetables have started growing simultaneously across the country including Ishwardi.
Due to the lack of coordination between the Department of Agriculture Extension and the Department of Agriculture Marketing, the farmers have to suffer with their hard-earned vegetables.
Farmers say that the money earned by picking vegetables from the land with daily labourers and selling them in the market does not cover the wages and transportation costs. Profit is far away, money has to be brought from home and spent. So they stopped picking vegetables from the land.
Cauliflower and cabbage were sold at Tk 80-100 per kg, radish at Tk 50 paise and beans at Tk 8 per kg in Ishwardi wholesale market on Wednesday. Similarly, the price of brinjal has also decreased from Tk 30 per kg to Tk 12-15 per kg. Raw chillies were sold at Tk 20 per kg.
Shahinuzzaman Shahin, a farmer of Maniknagar village in Sahapur Union, said that he cultivated radish in 4 bigha. There are no people to buy radish in the market.
The money that is earned by selling at 20 taka per kg ie 50 paise per kg does not cover the wages of the workers and the vehicle rental to bring them to the market. So he has stopped raising radish from the land.
