Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin has urged the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) to develop a roadmap to enhance regional trade.

“To strengthen BIMSTEC, partner countries can play a pivotal role in fostering a conducive environment for businesses in the region,” he stated during a meeting with BIMSTEC Secretary General Indra Mani Pandey at the Secretariat on Monday.

According to the Ministry of Commerce, both sides engaged in detailed discussions on areas where BIMSTEC can operate more effectively.

The organisation, established to promote trade, investment, and economic cooperation, is committed to safeguarding the interests of its member states, Sk Bashir Uddin noted.

The BIMSTEC Secretary General emphasised that ministerial meetings among partner countries would enable the organisation to play a more effective role.

Indra Mani Pandey also sought the cooperation of the Bangladesh government in ensuring that these meetings are productive in boosting exports, imports, and investments across the region.

Secretary (Routine Responsibilities) of the Ministry of Commerce, Md Abdur Rahim Khan, was also present at the meeting.

BIMSTEC, comprising Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, aims to accelerate economic growth and social progress in the Bay of Bengal region through joint efforts based on equality and partnership.
