The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has recovered a 5km stretch along the Kodla River at the Matila border in Moheshpur upazila, Jhenaidah district, which was previously under India’s jurisdiction. The Kodla River flows across both Bangladesh and Indian territories.

The BGB announced the development at a press conference held on the riverbank at Matila on Monday afternoon.

The event was attended by Moheshpur BGB-58 Battalion Commanding Officer Lt Col Azizus Shahid, Lt Col Rafique, and Matila Camp Commander Mokhtar Hossain.

According to Lt Col Azizus Shahid, although 4.8km of the Kodla River falls within Bangladesh’s territory, citizens of Bangladesh had no access to the land and were barred from using it.

The area had been utilized exclusively by Indian citizens for activities like fishing and other necessities.
Lt Col Shahid explained that the BGB had been advocating for Bangladesh’s rightful claim to the land for an extended period, presenting substantial evidence to support their case.

Recently, the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) agreed to return the disputed area to Bangladesh. Both nations’ border forces formalized this resolution through a mutual agreement.

Following the agreement, the recovered land is now fully accessible to Bangladeshi citizens for various uses. Local residents expressed their satisfaction and welcomed the establishment of Bangladesh’s control over the land.
