The Bangladesh Poultry Association (BPA) has announced plans to sell eggs and chicken at fair prices starting 12 January at 20 locations across Dhaka, as part of a smart market management initiative aimed to stabilize the prices of these two commodities in the upcoming Holy Month of Ramadan.

BPA President Sumon Hawlader made the statement at a press conference held at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the capital on Saturday.

“We’ll gradually expand the initiative to 100 points, selling eggs, frozen chicken, and other agricultural products at a limited profit,” he said.

During the press conference, Sumon presented a 10-point charter of demands to the government and criticized the corporate sector’s dominance in the poultry market, which he argued is harming marginal farmers.

“The unreasonable price hike caused by feed and chick syndicates is a significant problem for marginal farmers, making it hard for them to cover production costs,” he stated.

“Corporate companies are controlling the market by producing feed, chicks, eggs, and chicken. This prevents marginal farmers from competing fairly,” BPA President explained.

Sumon also highlighted the challenges farmers face due to price hikes caused by syndicates in the feed and chick markets.

“This syndicate must be dismantled and affordable feed and chicks must be ensured for farmers.”
The BPA President also said this initiative would be more effective through the skills and enthusiasm of the interested individuals, which would expedite further the development of the country’s agricultural sector and market management

BPA Vice President Bappi Kumar Dey, General Secretary Md Ilias Khandaker, Joint General Secretary Md Kausar Ahmed, Organising Secretary Md Iqbal Hossain, Office Secretary Md Mejbaul Haque were present, among others, on the occasion.

In addition, all members of the central committee as well as a large number of marginal farmers producing eggs and chickens from all districts and upazilas were present.
