Ex-DMP chief Faruq barred from leaving country

A Dhaka court has imposed a travel ban on former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq and his wife, Sharmin Akter Khan.

The order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Jakir Hossain Galib on Wednesday following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

According to ACC Court Inspector Amir Hossain, the petition was submitted by ACC Assistant Director Rakibul Hayat, with ACC lawyer Mir Ahmed Ali Salam presenting it during the hearing. After reviewing the petition, the court approved the travel ban.

The petition stated that retired Additional Inspector General of Police (IGP) and former DMP Commissioner Faruq is under investigation for alleged misuse of power, embezzlement of government funds through irregularities and corruption, illegal acquisition of assets worth Tk 30 billion in his and his family members’ names, and laundering money abroad.

The ACC investigation uncovered information suggesting that the accused were planning to flee the country. The petition argued that their departure could severely undermine the ongoing investigation. Consequently, it was deemed necessary to bar them from traveling abroad to ensure a fair and unhindered inquiry into the allegations.
