Tulip Siddiq – the daughter of Sheikh Rehana and the niece of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina – has been residing in the United Kingdom for an extended period. A member of the UK Parliament and currently serving as a minister, she is now facing legal repercussions for breaking the law.
She has violated the law by failing to provide an Energy Performance Certificate for a property owned by her. As a result, she could face a minimum fine of £10,000, reports British media outlet, Daily Mail.
The report mentions that earlier this year, Tulip Siddiq was also subject to an investigation. She had been accused of failing to declare rental income from a property for more than a year. However, the court accepted her explanation, saying that it was an “administrative error.”
Now, she is facing complications over the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for a property. According to a report in the Daily Mail on Sunday, Tulip Siddiq and her husband bought a flat in London for €885,000 in 2018.
The property was rented out through an agency, but under British law, the energy performance certificate for rental properties was missing from Tulip Siddiq’s flat.
The report said she is facing questions about whether she has complied with her legal obligations as a landlord. She has been unable to provide an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC).
It further mentions that landlords who fail to adhere to the Energy Performance Certificate regulations for more than three months could face a minimum fine of £10,000.
As the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Tulip Siddiq had previously been investigated by a parliamentary oversight body regarding her management of British financial services policies, reforms, and regulations.
At that time, the Daily Mail reported that Tulip had failed to properly declare rental income exceeding £10,000 from a flat for nearly 14 months.
Separately, she is currently involved in a large-scale corruption investigation. She and four members of her family are under investigation in Bangladesh over allegations of embezzling £400 million from a nuclear power plant project.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet Office’s Propriety and Ethics Team has interviewed Tulip. However, she denies the allegations, saying that no authorities have contacted her so far.
