Staff Reporter :

Eminent economist Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya has stressed the need to prioritise immediate public welfare before embarking on ambitious reform agendas, particularly in the lead-up to elections.

Highlighting the delicate balance between aspirations for reform and the urgent need for public relief, he remarked, “Reforms represent a grand vision, but it is essential to prioritise the immediate needs of the people.

Failing to provide relief while
focusing solely on reforms risks alienating reform-oriented individuals and undermining broader societal trust.”

Dr Debapriya made these comments on Friday during a national dialogue titled “Which Path for Unity,” held at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) auditorium in Dhaka.

In his address, he further emphasised the importance of tackling present challenges to pave the way for meaningful progress.

He stated, “In my quest for excellence, I must not disregard the good that can be achieved now. While aspiring to reach the pinnacle of reform, I must also ensure that immediate problems are tackled effectively.

Without resolving the pressing concerns of today, achieving long-term goals will remain out of reach.”

The dialogue, which explores themes of unity, reform, and elections, is a two-day event organised by the Forum for Bangladesh Studies.

The first day featured virtual participation from Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus, who inaugurated the proceedings and shared his insights on the importance of collective efforts in shaping the nation’s future.

The event seeks to foster meaningful discussions on balancing urgent public relief with long-term strategies for reform, unity, and democratic progress.
