A report published in our newspaper said, killings, muggings, and robberies have created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty among citizens, especially following the tragic events surrounding the July Movement.

The recent targeted assassinations of students, including the brutal murders of Tazbir Hossain Shihan and Mohammad Simanta, have raised serious concerns about the safety of young people in the country.

These incidents are not isolated; they reflect a broader pattern of violence that appears to be politically motivated, with allegations of revenge by factions seeking to destabilise the nation during this transitional period.

The chilling reality is that these killings are perceived as acts of vengeance against those who dared to challenge the status quo.

The interim government, which took office in August, faces the daunting task of restoring law and order in a climate where police stations were abandoned during the mass uprising.

While new leadership within the police force has been appointed, the lack of tangible improvements in public safety is disheartening.

The recent brutal attack in Chandpur, where seven individuals were killed aboard a vessel, underscores the urgent need for effective crime prevention strategies.

Moreover, the rising incidents of mugging and robbery, particularly in urban areas, have left residents fearful of venturing out, especially at night. The public’s growing anxiety is exacerbated by the perception that many crimes go unreported; as victims often choose to remain silent rather than face a system that may not adequately protect them.

We must say that the government and law enforcement agencies should take decisive action to address these escalating issues. This includes thorough investigations into the recent killings, increased police presence in vulnerable areas, and a commitment to restoring public confidence in the rule of law.
