3 sent to jail after remand

A Narayanganj court has sent three accused to jail in a case filed over the death of Buet student Muhtasim Masud in a road accident at Purbachal.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Nur Mohsin issued the order today (25 December) after the trio were presented in court upon completion of two-day remand, said the court police Inspector Qaiyum Khan.

Earlier on 22 December, the same court granted a two-day remand for the suspects to facilitate further investigation. On 21 December, Rupganj police station’s Assistant Sub-Inspector Mehedi Hasan lodged a caser under the Narcotics Control Act 2018 against Mubin Al Mamun, 20, Mirajul Karim, 22, and Asif Chowdhury, 19. Mubin and Mirajul were charged for consuming and carrying drugs, while Asif was charged for assisting them.

The first case was filed by deceased Muhtasim Masud’s father Masud Mia against the trio under the Road Transport Act 2018 on Friday (20 December), several hours after the incident that took place at the Nila Market intersection on the 300-feet road in Purbachal in the early hours of the day.

The accused include Mubin Al Mamun, the driver of the car, and his two friends, Mirazul Karim and Asif Chowdhury. Mubin Al Mamun is the son of Brigadier General (retd) Abdullah Al Mamun. He was driving the vehicle at the time of the incident on December 19. During a search of the private car, authorities discovered a can of beer and an empty liquor bottle.

A dope test conducted on the three suspects revealed positive results for two of them. According to Narayanganj District Civil Surgeon AFM Mushiur Rahman, Mubin Al Mamun tested positive for both marijuana and alcohol, while passenger Mirazul Karim tested positive for alcohol.

The victim’s father, Masud, has filed a case under the Traffic Act regarding his son’s death.

Additionally, the police have filed a separate case under the Narcotics Act against the accused. Their arrests have also been recorded in connection with the drug-related charges.
