Engineer Kazi Md. Wahidul Islam, a diehard leader of the Bangabandhu Engineers Council, is likely to be appointed as the Managing Director (MD) of Rupali Bank this week. This information was revealed by relevant sources.
State-owned Rupali Bank, listed on the stock market, recently appointed Md. Abdur Rahim as MD. However, his appointment was canceled due to allegations of writing two poems praising Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Abdur Rahim was dismissed from the MD position solely for writing poems while the new appointee, Kazi Md. Wahidul Islam, is also a prominent leader of the Bangabandhu Engineers Council. Md. Abdur Rahim is currently serving as Deputy Managing Director (DMD) at Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB).
It has been learned that Kazi Md. Wahidul Islam has been serving as the Senior Vice President of the Bangabandhu Engineers Council committee at Rupali Bank since January 11, 2021. The committee’s president is Engineer Sachindra Nath Samaddar.
On October 21, a notification was issued for the appointment of MDs for five banks, including Sonali, Rupali, Agrani, Janata, and BASIC Bank. However, the appointment of Rupali Bank’s MD was withheld for the above mentioned reason.
Kazi Md. Wahidul Islam is currently serving as Deputy Managing Director (DMD) of Sonali Bank.
It is noteworthy that during Sheikh Hasina’s government, the Ministry of Finance instructed state-owned commercial banks on September 19 to terminate the remaining contract periods of MDs appointed on a contractual basis. This left the MD and CEO positions vacant in several banks.
Subsequently, a final list of 10 candidates for MD and CEO positions in six state-owned commercial banks and four specialized banks was prepared and recommended by the Financial Institutions Division.
