Postgraduate trainee doctors have staged a protest by blocking the Shahbagh intersection, calling for an increase in their monthly allowance or the implementation of a 9th-grade pay scale. The demonstration has resulted in significant traffic congestion in the surrounding areas.
Postgraduate trainee doctors from different parts of the country gathered at the BSMMU hospital and took position at the intersection around 1pm to press home their demand for raising their allowance from Tk 25,000 to Tk 50,000.
They said they will not leave until they are assured by the authorities concerned about fulfilling their demand, reports UNB.
Mahmudul Bashar, a trainee doctor from the Medicine Department of BSMMU and an FCPS Part Two trainee, said, “Currently, we receive an allowance of Tk 25,000 and it is often not paid timely. How can we survive? Considering everything, we should at least be given an allowance of 50,000.”
He said the Doctors Movement for Justice Society, along with its affiliated organisation the Postgraduate Private Trainee Doctors Association has been protesting for an allowance increase since 2022.
“We have learned that the matter is still pending at the finance ministry. Despite multiple ultimatums, no effective action has been taken,” he added.
