Deshbandhu Textile Mills, located in the Uttara Export Processing Zone (EPZ) of northern Bangladesh, has emerged as a leading export-oriented garment manufacturer. With a reputation for innovation, efficiency, and environmentally conscious practices, the mill is setting new benchmarks in the industry.

Saiful, a finishing worker, has expressed his satisfaction with the factory’s work environment and managerial behaviour, contrasting it positively with his previous workplace in Gazipur. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Saiful managed to secure a position at Deshbandhu Textile Mills and is now earning over 16,000 taka. He appreciates the opportunity to work near his home, allowing him to support his family and maintain a balanced lifestyle.

According to Imuk Uzzal, General Manager of Production, all products manufactured by Deshbandhu Textile Mills are exclusively exported. The mill has successfully avoided shipment cancellations, a common issue in the industry, as the relationships and unity among the owner, management, and employees are strong. Products are primarily exported via the EPZ and Chittagong port, although improved transportation infrastructure, such as a railway station near the EPZ, is needed.

Md. Ibrahim Akhon, another General Manager of Production told the New Nation that “Currently, the major buyers of their products are two European countries: the US-based Key Tri, Costco, and Dickies, and Spain’s Mango Company.

The company is actively seeking to expand its market reach by partnering with more countries and companies. Negotiations with the UK-based Primark Company are already in the final stages. However, meeting current demand has been challenging, necessitating the acquisition of modern machinery and the expansion of factory capacity.”

The factory’s commitment to efficiency is evident through its investment in auto-setup machines, which are rare in Bangladesh. This advanced technology enables the mill to complete tasks more efficiently. The factory spans a total area of 271,272 square feet, with a focus on denim garments, embroidery, washing, and printing. The annual production capacity stands at 74.72 million pieces, although operational constraints currently limit output to 6 million pieces.

Md Ashraf Ullah, Head of HR, Admin, and Compliance at Deshbandhu Textile Mills, highlighted the company’s significant contribution to the country’s economy and its role in addressing unemployment. The factory has created numerous job opportunities, especially in North Bengal.
Ullah further added that there is a shortage of skilled workers in the region. While there is a high demand for garment workers, the lack of training institutes in the area poses a challenge.

However, the company is addressing this issue by providing training to its employees.
FM Shafiul Azam, Merchandising Manager, reported that the factory has 56 production lines, with 24 currently in full operation. The mill employs around 2,500 of its potential workforce of 8,000, highlighting room for growth. Most raw materials are sourced locally, while some are imported from India and China. Despite pandemic-induced disruptions, the factory maintained its production activities, adhering to health and government regulations to support the national economy.

EPZ, currently spread over 200 acres and expanding to 300 acres, hosts 20 factories employing 40,000 workers. To enhance efficiency, the region’s infrastructure requires significant renovation and development. Additionally, the factory is working on constructing a new shed to increase capacity, with funding dependent on accessible bank loans.
