Police have requested a five-day remand for three individuals arrested in connection with the death of BUET student Mohtasim Masud in a tragic accident in Purbachal, Narayanganj. The remand hearing is scheduled for Sunday, as confirmed by Rupganj Police Station.

The three suspects, identified as Mubin Al Mamun, Md. Mirazul Karim, and Asif Chowdhury, were presented before the court on Friday. The court, considering it a holiday, sent the suspects to jail and set the remand hearing for December 22.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday night when a private car struck a motorcycle at a police checkpoint in Purbachal. Mohtasim Masud, a 22-year-old student from BUET’s CSE department, died on the spot, while his two companions, Mehedi Hasan Khan and Amit Saha, sustained severe injuries.

According to Rupganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Liaqat Ali, a checkpoint had been set up on the 300-feet road due to frequent crimes in the area. The car involved in the accident failed to stop, collided with the barricade, and subsequently hit the motorcycle. The driver, Mubin Al Mamun, was unable to produce a valid driving license during police interrogation.

Police also discovered a can of beer and an empty liquor bottle inside the car, further fueling concerns of reckless driving under the influence.

The defense lawyer, Advocate Abu Rayhan, claimed that heavy fog and an unmarked checkpoint contributed to the accident. “The car struck the barricade due to poor visibility, which led to the tragic incident,” he said while speaking to reporters outside the court.

The victim’s father has filed a case under the Road Transport Act at Rupganj Police Station. Police have assured a thorough investigation into the incident to ensure justice for the deceased and the injured students.

The tragic loss of a promising young life has sparked outrage, with many calling for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and increased accountability for road safety in Bangladesh.
