Keraniganj Rupali Bank: Armed robbers give up after hostage negotiations

Members of the joint forces cordon off the entire Chunkotia area of South Keraniganj in Dhaka on Thursday as a gang of robbers entered the Jinjira branch of Rupali Bank to commit robbery.

Three armed robbers, who attempted to rob the Keraniganj branch of Rupali Bank Limited on Thursday, have surrendered to the joint forces along with their weapons.

They surrendered to the authorities in response to their request, confirmed RAB-10 CEO Khalilur Rahman Howlader at around 5:30 pm.

The officer-in-charge (OC) of the local police station, Mazharul Islam, also confirmed the development, stating that the robbers were taken away by law enforcement agencies after their surrender.

Video footage from the scene shows law enforcement vehicles leaving the area.

Earlier, at around 2:00 pm, the robbers entered the Jinjira branch of Rupali Bank Limited, taking several bank officials and customers hostage.

A total of 12 people were held at gunpoint, including customers and bank employees.

Locals alerted the police about the situation, prompting a swift response from various law enforcement agencies, including the police, army, and RAB, who cordoned off the building.

During the standoff, the robbers demanded a ‘safe exit’ in exchange for the release of the hostages. Following negotiations, the robbers surrendered to the joint forces.
