BNP’s Salahuddin criticises govt for delayed election roadmap
Staff Reporter :
BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed has stated that the preparation for elections should take no more than four to six months. He made this remark on Wednesday during a health service event for the underprivileged in the Korail slum area of Gulshan, Dhaka, organised by the Ziaur Rahman Foundation.
Salahuddin emphasised, “The primary responsibility of this government is to ensure free and fair elections. For this, certain legal, institutional, and field-level reforms are necessary.
Our analysis and observations suggest that these reforms should not take more than four to six months.”
Calling for a transparent democratic process, he stressed that no political manoeuvring should hinder the electoral roadmap. “Everyone is eagerly awaiting the elections, so the reforms must be completed swiftly to ensure timely polls,” he added.
Salahuddin also expressed dissatisfaction with the progress of the election roadmap, stating that the BNP’s expectations had not been met.
He criticised government agencies for their inefficiency, alleging that these failures allowed associates of authoritarian regimes to flee the country. “Those who aided these fugitives must be identified,” he demanded.
His remarks highlight the urgency of electoral reforms and the need for a clear roadmap to ensure a credible and timely election. The comments come amidst ongoing debates about the timeline and preparations required for the next national elections in Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi commented on India’s role in Bangladesh’s Liberation War, stating that while India played a supportive role, the country would have achieved independence even without India’s assistance.
Rizvi made these remarks as the chief guest at an event held in front of Karnafuli Garden City in Shantinagar, Dhaka, on Wednesday morning, organised to call for a boycott of Indian goods.
To support his claim, Rizvi referenced Colonel M.A.G. Osmani, the Supreme Commander of the Liberation War, saying, “When political leaders failed to make a decisive move, a young major (Ziaur Rahman) inspired the nation by declaring Bangladesh’s Liberation War from the Kalurghat radio station.
This declaration created a wave of enthusiasm among military officers and the people of Bangladesh, who then joined the liberation struggle.”
Rizvi also criticised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent statement, where Modi described Bangladesh’s Victory Day on December 16 as ‘India’s historic victory’. Rizvi argued that such comments undermine the contributions and sacrifices made by the people of Bangladesh during the Liberation War.
