Entertainment Desk :

A biopic on one of Bangladesh’s one of the most influential political figures, Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani, is set to hit the big screen next year.

Known as the ‘Majloom Jononeta’ (leader of the oppressed) Bhashani spent his life fighting for the rights of the marginalised and downtrodden.

The film, titled ‘Bhashani,’ is being directed by Syed Wahiduzzaman Diamond, with pre-production already underway.

Shooting is expected to start in mid-2025, said a press release.
Director Wahiduzzaman Diamond said in this regard, “Maulana Bhashani wasn’t just significant in Bangladesh’s history, but also a key figure from the British colonial era.

I decided to make this film to introduce him to today’s generation.”

While work on the film is only beginning now, director Wahiduzzaman revealed that the idea has been over 15 years in the making.

His first film, ‘Nacholer Rani’ (2006), which portrayed the struggles of female revolutionary Ila Mitra, inspired him to consider a project on Bhashani.
However, due to various challenges, the project remained shelved for years.

During this time, the filmmaker quietly conducted research on Bhashani’s life without publicising his plans.

When asked why he chose this moment to move forward with the film, the director explained, “Bhashani’s life is deeply intertwined with both the fight against British rule and the history of Bangladesh’s independence. Making this film required thorough research.

Now is the right time for this story. For too long, political dynamics kept his legacy in the shadows.

I was initially concerned whether a film on him would even be allowed to be released. History must be portrayed truthfully, and I feared how it would be received. But that concern is no longer relevant. Today, no one has the power to suppress Bhashani’s story.”

The film will cover Bhashani’s life starting from his early years at the age of 13. Three actors will portray him at different stages of his life, though casting for the lead role is still ongoing.

Wahiduzzaman plans to hold auditions for the part, aiming to cast fresh faces. “I’m looking for someone who genuinely looks and feels like Bhashani, not a well-known face. The audition process will be announced soon.”

Wahiduzzaman Diamond also disclosed that filming will begin on May 16, 2025. The date is symbolic, as it marks the anniversary of Bhashani’s historic march against the Farakka Barrage in 1976. Before production starts, the cast and crew will be officially announced.
