The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has banned all types of gatherings, processions, rallies, and protests in the southwestern area of the Turag River, as well as in Karampur , Abdullahpur, and Uttara Sector-10 until further notice.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali (NDC) issued the order in a notice on Wednesday.
The release said, “In response to the recent situation and to maintain public order, under the powers conferred by Section 29 of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ordinance (Ordinance No. III/76), it has been declared that from 2pm on Wednesday (December 18, 2024) any kind of gathering, procession, rally, march, or protest in the areas of Karampur , Abdullahpur, Uttara Sector-10, and the southwestern part of the Turag River will be prohibited until further notice.”
Earlier on Wednesday, a violent clash broke out between the followers of Maulana Jubayer and Maulana Saad over control of the Tongi Ijtema ground. The incident resulted in three fatalities, with nearly a hundred others reported injured.
The deceased have been identified as Bachchu Mia (70) from Agarsindu village in Pakundia, Kishoreganj, Belal (60) from Beraid area of Dhaka, and Tajul Islam (70) from Bogura.
According to local sources, around 3am, followers of Maulana Saad began entering the Ijtema ground through various roads, including the Karampur Bridge, from the western bank of the Turag River. In response, followers of Maulana Jubayer started hurling bricks and stones from inside the ground.
In retaliation, followers of Maulana Saad launched a counterattack. As they entered the ground, a fierce clash erupted between the two groups. Two people were killed at the scene, and another succumbed to their injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 7am on Wednesday. More than a hundred people were injured in the violence.
Confirming the matter, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tongi West Police Station Iskandar Habib said, “So far, we have received reports of two fatalities. The administration is working to maintain law and order at the scene.”
