Eminent poet Helal Hafiz passed away this afternoon (13 December) in Dhaka at the age of 76.
“The poet was declared dead upon arrival at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) hospital around 2:30pm,” said the hospital’s Director, Brigadier General Nazrul Islam Khan.
“Currently, his body is at BSMMU. Since no relatives accompanied him, I informed Shahbagh Police Station. The police are investigating any legal formalities,” he added.
The celebrated poet had been grappling with multiple health challenges for years, including glaucoma, kidney issues, diabetes, and neurological disorders.
Born on 7 October 1948, in Netrokona, Helal Hafiz discovered his love for poetry early in life. He pursued his higher education at the University of Dhaka, where his poetic talent flourished, leading to the creation of verses that deeply resonated with the spirit of the nation.
A towering figure in Bengali literature, Helal Hafiz was renowned for his evocative poetry, which encapsulated themes of social justice, human struggles, and political resistance.
His first poetry collection, Je Jole Agun Jwole (The Water Where Fire Is Ignited), published in 1986, became a bestseller and solidified his reputation as one of the era’s most influential poets. This landmark book has seen over 33 editions, reflecting its lasting impact.
His second collection, Kobita 71, came much later, in 2012, 26 years after his debut work. In addition to his poetic achievements, Hafiz had a long career in journalism, contributing to prominent newspapers such as Jugantor.
During Bangladesh’s anti-authoritarian movements, his poetry gained widespread acclaim, with the famous line from his poem Nishiddho Sampadokiyo (Forbidden Editorial), “Ekhon Joubon Jar, Michhile Jabar Tar Shreshtho Shomoy” (“Those who are young, now is the best time to join the procession”), becoming an emblematic slogan for protests.
In recognition of his immense contribution to Bengali literature, Hafiz received the prestigious Bangla Academy Award in 2013, along with other honors like the Khalekdad Chowdhury Award.
