Islam Palakar to be honoured at DU annual theatre fest

The Department of Theatre and Performance Studies at Dhaka University (DU) is set to honour noted Bangladeshi playwright Islam Uddin Palakar with the prestigious Natyajon Sommanona 2024
for his lifelong contribution to the nation’s indigenous theatre, said a press release.
Islam Uddin Palakar, widely known for his exceptional skills in folk theatre performance, has played a significant role in preserving and promoting Bangladesh’s traditional performing arts.
He has performed in various folk genres including Pala, Kichchha and Jhumur Jatra making significant contributions to cultural heritage preservation.
Islam Uddin Palakar’s works have also gained international recognition, and his recent performance of the song ‘Deora’ has stirred audiences worldwide. He has been involved in teaching folk performance techniques at leading universities like Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University and Jagannath University.
In addition, the 18th Annual Central Theatre Festival kicked off at Dhaka University on December 3 and will continue till December 13 celebrating 30 years of the department.
The festival will feature 18 plays directed by final-year students and showcase diverse theatrical works.
The opening ceremony was graced by DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan and other distinguished guests.
The festival’s theme titled ‘Buker Bhetor Darun Jhor, Aaj Srishti-Sukhe Ullash Kor’ focuses on the vibrancy and resilience of society, portraying the hope and struggle that define the collective human experience.
