The United Kingdom has issued a warning regarding the risk of terrorist attacks in Bangladesh. The British High Commission in Dhaka on Tuesday issued a travel advisory for foreign nationals, cautioning them about the potential threat.

The British high commission said, “Indiscriminate terrorist attacks could occur in crowded areas, religious sites, and political gatherings, among other locations. Some groups have targeted individuals they believe to have lifestyles and views contrary to Islam.

“Attacks have occasionally occurred against minority religious groups, as well as on police and security forces. Explosives have been used in these attacks in major cities. Bangladeshi authorities are working to thwart these planned attacks. There may be an increased presence of law enforcement and restrictions on movement at short notice.”

Issuing a travel warning, the British high commission said, “You must remain aware of your surroundings, particularly near police establishments. Avoid large gatherings and areas with a heavy presence of police and law enforcement personnel.”

Regarding the political situation in Bangladesh, the British high commission said widespread violence occurred across the country in July and August 2024, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries.

“The situation remains unstable. Political rallies and gatherings are still ongoing. These could quickly escalate into violence, potentially leading to clashes with law enforcement. During protests and strikes across cities and towns, incidents of violence, vandalism, and arson may occur, which could turn fatal.

“Recent unrest in Bangladesh has affected police operations, with significant damage to several police stations across the country. While most of these stations have resumed operations, not all police officers have returned to duty.”

The High Commission has mentioned the presence of criminal gangs in Dhaka and other cities, warning of risks related to robberies, violent crimes, and sexual assaults.
