Meteorologists have predicted that a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal may intensify into a cyclone by the end of this week. If it forms, the cyclone will be named “Fenjal,” as per the naming list provided by Saudi Arabia. However, its potential impact on Bangladesh remains uncertain at this stage.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has reported that the seasonal low-pressure system is currently situated over the southern Bay of Bengal, with its extension reaching up to the northern Bay. Light rain is expected in some areas of Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram divisions due to the cyclone’s influence. Ports in Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Payra, and Mongla have been instructed to hoist the distant cautionary signal number 1.
The Indian Meteorological Department reported on Friday (November 29) that Cyclone Fenjal was located approximately 770 kilometers south-southeast of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It is expected to make landfall within the next 12 hours, moving northwest toward Sri Lanka’s coast over the next two days.
Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall has been forecast for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, with winds reaching up to 65 km/h along the eastern Indian coastline. Districts including Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, and Tiruvallur have already begun experiencing heavy rainfall, with schools and colleges ordered to remain closed.
In anticipation of the cyclone’s impact, Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister M.K. Stalin chaired high-level meetings and deployed multiple disaster response teams. Over 1,600 relief centers have been set up across the state to aid those affected.
While the cyclone is not expected to make direct landfall in Bangladesh, its indirect effects may bring light rainfall to the country’s southern regions. Residents and authorities in vulnerable areas are advised to stay updated and take necessary precautions.
