A clash erupted between two groups of the BNP in Araihazar, Narayanganj, over the omission of a local leader’s name from a banner. The incident left at least 10 people injured, including Masud Mia (17), Sabbir Hossain (25), Habibur Rahman (40), and Kawsar Mia (26).
Among the injured, Masud Mia and Sabbir Hossain, who sustained severe injuries, have been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment, while the rest are receiving care at the Upazila Health Complex. The altercation occurred on Sunday afternoon in the Srinivasdi area of Mahmudpur Union.
According to the police and locals, preparations were underway for the final match of a football tournament organized by the Srinivasdi Friends Club, set to take place on Monday at the Mahmudpur Union Parishad grounds. The main guest of the event was Central BNP’s Assistant Organizational Secretary for the Dhaka Division, Nazrul Islam Azad.
The tension began around noon when a banner was put up on the event stage, excluding the name of local union BNP leader Amir Hossain. Supporters of Mahmudpur Union BNP President Masum Shikari confronted the organizers over this, leading to an argument and eventually a physical altercation. Later, Amir Hossain’s supporters dismantled the stage in retaliation.
In response, Masum Shikari’s followers, armed with traditional weapons, launched an attack on Amir Hossain’s residence around 3 PM. This escalated into a violent clash between the two groups, leaving 10 people injured.
Araihazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Enayet Hossain stated that police arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. To prevent further violence, law enforcement personnel have been deployed in the area. The OC added that legal actions will be taken after receiving a formal complaint and conducting a proper investigation.
